WASTE MANAGEMENT

Abdullah Gül University has established a Waste Management Committee to sustainably manage environmental work at the University. The Committee has begun its exemplary work and projects for the society in light of scientific data. They aim to increase personal and communal awareness in the fight against global climate change and set in place a sustainable economic, social, and socio-cultural process.

Within the scope of Zero Waste Management, waste reduction, reuse, and sorting processes were created for the Student Village, where the students of our University accommodate. Sustainable environmental management is premised on mitigating negative human effects on nature, substituting possible negative impact with constructive work. Within this scope, carbon footprint reduction, nature conservation, more green spaces are prominent areas of action.

At the University, the following activities are already in progress: prevention and minimization of waste generation, promotion of reuse, waste recycling or disposal according to the legislation.

These activities, i.e., separate collection of recyclable wastes, storage of hazardous wastes, and their transfer to disposal facilities, minimize the harmful impact of wastes on nature and contribute to the economy by waste utilization and value production.

The Committee's principle underpins that measurement is indispensable for management. With this principle, in 2019 a waste inventory sheet was created to measure the waste amount at the Student Village and minimize the adverse environmental effects of the wastes originating therein with affordable methods. Based on the inventory, monthly food waste is 1,550.4 kg at the Student Village.

With the Waste Management Directive published on 12 July 2019 on the Official Gazette no. 30829, a zero waste management system was established for the Student Village. Thanks to this system, the Zero Waste Certificate has now been obtained.
